Welcome to September’s volume of Women in Music. Our Woman In Music for September is Lara Fabian and Tina Turner.

Born in Jan of 1970 this French pop singer was raised in North Belgium and Italy by her Flemish father and Sicilian Mother, the French, English, Italian and Spanish speaking Lara knew that she wanted to be a performer at a very early age in life.

Lara took, singing, dancing, piano and music lessons. She had already begun taking lesions at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels by the age of 8 and continued taking them for the next 10 years. By the time Lara was 14 she had begun performing and writing songs. Her father was a guitarist and backup vocalist, and would accompany her on the guitar during her performances.

Some of Lara’s favorite artists were Barbra Streisand and the late Freddie Mercury of Queen. Listening to this diversity of music influenced Lara’s style, who says that although she is a pop singer, her music is not purely pop – It varies from classical and rock to country.

After achieving success and fame in Europe with the release of several hit single on a French label, Lara felt that she had to the place she calls “The Conservative” Europe, so that she could simply be herself and explore who she really is and who she really wants to be. She moved to Montreal Quebec right after she completed High School. Lara simply fell in love with the city and new it was her next home. Now motivated to work and start her career in North America, Lara established an independent record label and publishing company, while under the existing production company and the help of her old friend, producer/songwriter Rick Allison, Lara was ready to begin her creative process.

It’s 1991 Lara released her first album, co-written by Rick Allison and featuring her singing in French and it was a hit. Her album sold over 100,000 copies and it led to Lara touring all of Quebec in support of her album.

After a few albums and much success, Sony Music had gotten word of Lara’s simply tremendous success in Europe and Quebec, the wanted to sign the singer/songwriter to their record label. Lara headed to America, and recorded her first English Album, while working with big league producers such as Walter Afanadieff (who worked with Mariah Carey), Pat Leonard (Madonna) and Brian Rawling (Cher).

Lara has a huge following and is a fantastic artist. She doesn’t consider herself to be a singer nor a diva – She refers to herself as “A songwriter with a voice” – With her soulful voice and diverse style, she has definitely proven to have covered and crossed many international boundaries in her quest for being the pop star and singer that she is today.

Born Anna May Bullock, Tina Turner has become one of the worlds top leading Women in Music today. She dominated the Rock and Roll music industry in the 80's and 90's with songs like Private Dancer; What's Love got to do with it and Simple the Best.

She was born November 26, 1939 and was raised in Nutbush Tennessee till the age of 16 where she moved to St Louis Missouri where she meets Ike Turner. She and Ike were popular in the 60's and 70's by the name Ike and Tina Turner Revue. After her and Ike split she made her come back as a solo artists in the mid 80's.

Throughout her career Tina has received numerous awards and honors. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the 90's. She has a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. She is the winner of 7 Grammy Awards.
