Cause of The Month
By Linda J
For my article this month I have chosen an organization which is familiar to most of us all around the world.
Established in London in 1878 by William Booth, this organization has been a leading light to people over the whole world. The work of The Salvation Army is meeting the people at the point of their need and trying to provide comfort and this I believe they have done well.
Some of the things the Army does all over the world are:
Provides meals and assistance on site in fire, flood etc.
Traces missing relatives and friends.
Warmth and shelter in times of natural and other disasters.
Meals and assistance on site in fire and flood etc.
There are lots of other things done Christmas music played for the people, visiting Hotels and reaching out to people, irrespective of colour or creed. All of these things are done without a value judgement.
I currently work in Family Support assisting with interviewing clients who are in great need of support for food, clothing and many other issues. We have Counsellors on Staff and also try to help people learn to take control of their lives. Financial Counsellor helping with budgeting, Family Counsellor who is there at no cost for our clients. We also have a Gambling Counsellor helping clients break the long established gambling problems.

This is where I work in Adelaide, South Australia and the Centre operates as a Chapel, Support Agency, Youth Club, Sunday School,Womens Group, Craft Group and we hold a barbeque every Monday for the community. It is just what it says it is A Community Centre there is always a cup of tea/coffee and a listening ear.
On Christmas Day a special lunch is held for those in the area who would be alone and last year we hosted over 140 people, Santa visited and all our guests received a gift. We cooked Turkey/Ham and they had all of the fancy things that go with Christmas. This same sort of service is provided world wide and I am proud to be part of an exceptional team.
In a world that lives in constant turmoil it is a great comfort to people to have the continuity of organizations such as Salvation Army there in the background ready and willing to offer assistance when needed. All done in a non judgemental way and irrespective of colour or creed.

Claire and Dale, Margaret and Peter who all give so much of themselves to clients and staff - it is a great team.
