"Under the Harvest Moon"

A story by the Literary Garden girls, September 2007

Winter Wolf - Part I

It was a glorious fall evening, as they gather round the fireside, so many of them have traveled far and wide to be by the head monster's side. He stands before them, an old and regal creature, with his arms lifted towards the sky.

“Great friends, large and small. I welcome you, one and all!” He calls from the center of the little stage. He is a very handsome elderly vampire, with hair all of white, his pale complexion would give mortals a fright!

“Tonight, we gather to pick the new leader, to take my place after all of the years. For I have grown tired and have shed so many tears. So many of us have died, I can no longer take it, and yes, dear friends, I have tried.”

“But my Lord,” calls out Gobby goblin, “It is not that we have died! It is that no one believes in us! If there is no belief, then there is no fear! So, how can we exist? If there are no persons left to scream and shed tears?”

“ I know not how to answer. Except to take pride in yourselves, in who you are, and maybe we will be remembered like this planet floats around the stars.”

The werewolf moved up, making a lowly bow, rising up, he let out a howl. “Please my Lord, where shall we go? If we no longer follow your call, who then will be there, when our world falls?”

“I know deep in here,” The vampire points to his chest, “That somewhere out there, is a person or child, who remembers us and all of the rest. They remember our struggle and our strife, somewhere out there, ONE person…knows about our life!”

“We exist! We really do! Who will lead us, if not for you?”

Joanne - Part II

The old vampire smiled. He remembered his younger days. It would be different now; today's young people having their own style. Would it be worth it, he thought, especially as they had their own special way?

"Let us begin the votes. Who will come forth?" Everyone looked around; some looked at the ground, others took notes. Many felt rushed, confused and out of sorts.

Suddenly a howl was heard in the back. The group parted to let a tall vampire pass to the front place. As he reached the old man he nodded to the pack. "I propose myself; I will show you where our power lays."

"We need to stick together and not stray apart. Our power is in our numbers and our time is our strength," he harangued the crowd. "I will be a leader, not an upstart! Our purpose in life shows us true and proud!"

"Hear, hear!" the listening group howled and roared. They clapped their hands and hailed their new chief. The Old One slipped down; wrapped in his cape away he soared. Laughing and howling, he felt greatly relieved.

"We exist," they all shouted to all who could hear. "We are real, ha, ha, haaaah! It's starting, we can feel it; it's back, that great fear!"

Suddenly they were silenced by a blood-curdling scream.

Rosemary - Part III

The new leader of the vampires, with all the goblins decided that they should pick one day out of the year.

On this day all the vampires, ghosts, selections and goblins would come out and everyone would remember them forever. It would be the scariest night of the year.

In order for this to work though they would need to get all the people to be interested to get involved.

Now if the parents of the children would agree to letting the children and themselves dress up on this occasion to become a part of this mystery night.

Then it might work for the real vampire as well as everyone and they would never be forgotten. However this night would need to be called something special and the parents would need to know that everyone would enjoy and have fun.

The head master decided to call that night Halloween Night.

The leader of them decided that the children could go door to door dresses up like them all and ask for a treat if no treat then a trick would be played on that house.

So it was now in the hands of the children and the parents of each community weather there would be a scary night called Halloween Night!

It would need to take place on the last day of the harvest in October. Would each parent of all the children in all the lands allow this to happen? The new vampire leader wondered. Would all the Blood curdling screams be heard on that night forever more all over the globe?

Only time would hold the answers to this....

Dusty - Part IV

"Tommy," said Danielle angrily, tugging at her brother's arm. "Come on, we're going to miss all the good candy!"

A hideous mask hid the smile of the creature who was being tugged down the street by a girl dressed as a witch. Humans were really stupid it thought, as it walked along at a fast trot. What was the deal with all the candy anyway. Personally he hated the stuff, but the kids thought it was great. Give him raw meat anytime, that would suit him just fine. Disposing of the little bratty brother wasn't too hard either, he snickered to himself. The kid was probably still wandering around in the woods carrying his pillowcase wondering what happened to him.

Danielle skipped up the stairs of a darkened house, ignoring the screams and wild laughter coming from within. Ringing the bell, she waited impatiently for someone to answer the door. This was her favorite time of year, and she loved getting all the goodies from each home to fill her pillowcase. Her brother of course was too timid to say anything, so she always took the best handouts and tossed a few of the candies she didn't like to him. The door finally opened and Danielle held out her pillowcase and started to say "Trick or Treat", but the words stuck in her throat. The creature with her smiled even wider behind its mask, and its eyes momentarily glowed bright red in recognition.

Linda - Part V

Was there really recognition in those eyes of blood red? Was Danielle still standing at the doorstep, did she really ring the bell and most of all was Tommy still wandering in the woods.

Who was this creature behind the mask? These human children were out far later than they should have been on any night least of all the scariest night of the year. Their parents by this time would be almost frantic with worry about their precious little souls. Humans really were stupid to allow their children out on a night such as this.

Gobby Goblin removed the mask and bowed his head low before the Master, whom he had only met briefly one night long ago – the night of a Harvest Moon when the Old Leader had transferred his authority to a new Leader and hope was born again.

Danielle was transfixed with fear and panic blurred her beautiful blue eyes – her thoughts were racing to where Tommy was and the fate that would befall her if she went home without him in her care.

She turned to look again into the face of The Master and was surprised at the tenderness which softened his mouth with the hint of a smile. The Master addressed Gobby Goblin – “Will you ever learn Gobby?” “Will you ever know the rules? This night of Halloween is meant for fun and laughter for the children and here you have this child very frightened and worried about her brother.”

The Master took Danielle by the hand and led her to the edge of the woods where she could see Tommy crying in a clearing. “Go my child and get him, and take him home to his bed. I have lessons to teach Gobby” Take this red rose with you which I give you in trust so that you will believe in the power of good.” The Master really did smile and then was gone.

The Harvest Moon was setting when Danielle disturbed in her bed, she looked across the room and saw Tommy sleeping soundly and turned to sleep once more. Beside her on the pillow she found a beautiful red rose which she held in her hand as she drifted off to sleep once more.

There were lessons to be learned by all that night – Gobby learned not to scare children and Danielle learned to trust………….. and the Master…….. well he had learned those lessons long ago.
